December 31, 1999 was the night many of us remember as the moment we were on the brink of a new century. Y2K was a real fear for many. What would happen as we turned the page to a new era—the moment 2000 would begin at midnight? Would technology fail? Few of us had moved from one century to the next. What would tomorrow morning hold?
We remember that night well as we had been living on the farm for about 4 months and our twins, Jennifer and Craig, were turning 8 years old. The adventure of living on the farm meant new ways to mark birthdays and this year was celebrated with friends as we roasted hotdogs and marshmallows over a late night bonfire in the back yard. Some moments after midnight we realized all the lights were still on in the house and nothing catastrophic had happened. We had survived the transition to a new century!
With birthday party celebrations behind us, we woke on January 1, 2000 with great anticipation for the year ahead. It would be the year we planted pumpkins and a corn maze and prepared the farm for customers. While we had been coming to work on the farm for a couple of years, we finally were living there in our new home and this would be the year for us to invite the public to visit. We knew there was much work to be done but we clung tight to the words the Lord had given us two years prior on January 1. “We walk by faith and not by sight.” When the days got tough, we clung to those words and we believed God had a plan bigger than we could see.
As we come to the start of the second decade in 2000, we look forward again with great anticipation to a birthday year celebrating 20 years since our first school visit to the farm. And what a great year to celebrate 20 years—in 2020! We wish we could say we had “20/20” vision in those days to dream and plan for all that we are today, but we had no clue. If you had told us that we would now have a miniature golf course, a café and would host 17,000 people in a year, we might have been afraid to start.
But God, in His infinite wisdom knew to give us what we needed as we needed it and as we asked Him. And here we are today, ready to celebrate all that He has done.
So come along with us in 2020. Let’s celebrate all year long. We will tell the stories and we will ask to hear your stories. We will share the photos and ask to see your photos. And here’s the fun: we will celebrate our birthday by giving YOU gifts! Stay tuned and watch for giveaways on the 20th of every month. Sign up. Share on social media. Sign up when you come to visit and let’s celebrate a fun year by letting us give gifts back to you as we celebrate the birthday of Christian Way Farm.
2020 promises to be an even better year! We can’t wait to see you!
Blessings,
Milt and Janie
